Nintendo Switch 2 Versions of Zelda Games Will Support Save Data Transfers

Following earlier concerns regarding the lack of cloud save support for games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has issued a clarification. According to a report from GamingBolt, previous warnings on Nintendo's digital store have been updated to offer greater transparency.
Initially, the eShop listings for both titles displayed a warning that they did not support cloud backup through Nintendo Switch Online. This raised concerns that players might lose hundreds of hours of gameplay progress when upgrading to the new console.
However, the updated message now clarifies that only the save data created in the second save slot on the Switch 2 version cannot be transferred back to the original Nintendo Switch version. The revised explanation states:
"Save data created in the second save slot in the Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom cannot be transferred to the original Nintendo Switch version of the game."
This new message currently appears on the eShop pages for Tears of the Kingdom – Switch 2 Edition and Donkey Kong Bananza. However, the Switch 2 version of Breath of the Wild still displays the older warning.

Background on Cloud Save Concerns

Initial reports about some Switch 2 games lacking cloud save support surfaced in early April through digital store listings. These listings triggered widespread concern among Nintendo fans planning to upgrade to the new console.
The enhanced Switch 2 versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will launch alongside the new hardware on June 5, 2025. Current owners can upgrade to the enhanced versions by paying a $10 upgrade fee, while the enhanced editions will also be available for $70 as standalone digital purchases.
Nintendo has previously confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Breath of the Wild will not include the DLC content from the original Switch version. Players will need to purchase the DLC separately if they wish to access it.

Other Switch 2 Enhanced Games

Several other Nintendo titles are also receiving Switch 2 upgrades, including:
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree with the Jamboree TV expansion,
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land with the Star Crossed World DLC,
  • Upcoming titles like Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
The Switch 2 editions will not only feature graphical improvements, faster loading times, and performance enhancements, but some games will also include new content. Additionally, both Zelda titles will offer new features accessible via Nintendo’s official mobile app.
